About the Project

Execution of berthing and infrastructure project for new vessels.

BACKGROUND

SwitchCo were engaged to manage the new Berthing and Infrastructure Project at Webb Dock East in Melbourne to accommodate new larger Toll vessels. This project involved the complete excavation of the quayside to install new a strengthening structure, the installation of three new concrete dolphins fixed to the sea bed with driven piles, new fendering, dredging and installation of a scour pad within the berthing pocket, more than 200 driven piles in the quayside, and the installation of a new RoRo ramp.

CHALLENGES

Due to the nature of the port environment and the berth being built upon reclaimed land, there were significant challenges managing latent conditions and environmental factors. This related to the civil works along the quayside but also underwater within the berthing pocket where visibility is limited.

OUTCOMES

SwitchCo through innovative design challenges, extensive stakeholder engagement and a passion to deliver the best possible outcome for the client, successfully mitigated latent conditions and overcame significant project challenges. With numerous high risk activities and works on the project, SwitchCo worked collaboratively with the principal contractor to achieve great safety outcomes and culture on the project. All these factors contributed to the successful completion of the wharf infrastructure just days before the arrival of the new vessels.

Testimonial

"SwitchCo are incredibly committed to delivery and committed to building partnerships."
