About the Project

Management of procurement and construction for new ship accommodation.

BACKGROUND

With the purchase of two new ships to service the shipping route between Tasmania and mainland Australia from March 2019, Toll Shipping engaged SwitchCo to manage the procurement and construction of the works to the wharf and seabed at Burnie wharf. To account for these new longer, wider, and deeper vessels, works at Burnie included a new RoRo ramp and associated structure, four new concrete dolphins fixed to the seabed with steel piles, new fendering, and dredging of the sea bed.

CHALLENGES

The project timeline was the biggest challenge for this project, there was no room for movement as the delivery date of the new vessels was locked in well in advance. Burnie wharf consistently presented issues with existing conditions that meant we needed to be flexible, innovative and make quick decisions to prevent significant delays to works.

OUTCOMES

The successful delivery of this project was a very satisfying achievement for SwitchCo, Toll, and the Principal Contractor, McConnell Dowell. Through a terrific working relationship between all parties, this project was able to be delivered on time, and within budget.
