About the Project

In response to a client brief for a traditional repair, SwitchCo developed an innovative product in partnership with Peter Saxon from Shipman King. The new-to-industry Dip and ATG riser caps offer a solution when settling of concrete pavements leads to the application of pressure on tank top risers when driven over without the need for expensive civil works. - a transformative advancement for our client and for the industry.

BACKGROUND

Initially engaged to manage the repair of protruding Dip risers and ATG risers for a client based in New South Wales, SwitchCo proposed an innovative solution as an alternative. By challenging standard practice, SwitchCo lead the design and development of a new riser cap, and as a result the issues experienced by the protruding risers was able to be resolved without the need for exposure by reducing the overall height of Dip and ATG riser cap assemblies.

To ensure clarity for all stakeholders during the design development process, SwitchCo 3D printed models of the proposed solutions. Shipman King joined the team as the official manufacturing partner, expediting manufacture of prototypes so that the products could be trialled on-site. The new riser caps are now a standard Shipman King part, available to purchase.

CHALLENGES

SwitchCo’s solution to design a new product was born from the challenges faced by the initial brief – to repair the existing risers. The cost for this brief was high due to the need for concrete removal and tank top exposure, required to undertake this task the traditional way. It also required high-risk work including potential damage to underground services and impact to site. To overcome these issues, SwitchCo’s team worked to propose an alternate engineering solution. By removing the need for exposure and designing a new product as an alternate solution, SwitchCo saved the client time, money, and impact to their site.

OUTCOMES

Working in alignment with its core values and caring about the outcome for the client, SwitchCo delivered a solution which exceeded the client’s expectations and brief. By challenging the scope and methodology, SwitchCo provided a solution which reduced potential for future works at other facilities. It also reduces the future requirement for contractor management, as the task can now be performed as standard forecourt maintenance.

SwitchCo’s partnership with Shipman King meant the product could swiftly move from concept to prototype using industry-recognised materials and manufacturing techniques.
SwitchCo positively contributed to the future of the retail fuel industry with the design, development, and deliver of a newly designed product, in collaboration with Shipman King.
