About the Project
BACKGROUND
SwitchCo was engaged by Coles Supermarkets to manage the planning, design, construction, and opening of a new on-site integrated service station within the same site as a new supermarket, built by others. This highly specialised project involved extensive stakeholder management, clever design solutions and design management, well managed procurement processes, project management throughout, and superintendent inspection services at key milestones.
CHALLENGES
SwitchCo worked to overcome two significant challenges during the project. The requirements of the local council were in opposition with Shell’s standards for the canopy profile, requiring SwitchCo to facilitate significant consultation to reach a mutually agreeable outcome. Furthermore, SwitchCo utilised our highly specialised expertise to educate the local council on the importance of using a Class 1 Full Retention Oil Water Separator to mitigate risks caused by drips and spills of hydrocarbons on the forecourt. Without these intelligent design solutions being developed, approved, and implemented, the project could not have moved forward. Educating and collaborating with the relevant stakeholders to achieve a permit was critical to the project’s success.
OUTCOMES
Achieving a unique canopy profile that met both the stringent standards of Shell and was in keeping with the look and feel of the local area was a notable highlight of the project. The new supermarket and service station both opened on time and on budget with successful operation from the outset. As a result, Coles were able to attract more customers to the supermarket by having the service station onsite for immediate redemption of the discount fuel offer.
